What Reverse Osmosis Actually Does
An RO system pushes water through a very fine membrane that holds back dissolved solids, leaving the water noticeably cleaner in taste and clarity. It sits under your kitchen sink and feeds a separate drinking water faucet, and it can usually be plumbed to your refrigerator's water and ice line as well. It is a different job from a whole-house softener — the softener protects your plumbing and appliances from scale, while RO is about the water you drink and cook with.
Softener and RO Together
These two are often installed as a pair, and there is a good reason for that. A softener handles hardness across the whole house, which protects the water heater, the fixtures and the appliances. An RO unit at the kitchen sink then handles the water you actually consume. If you are already having a softener fitted, adding RO at the same visit is usually the efficient way to do it.
Keeping It Working
RO systems need their filters changed on a schedule and the membrane replaced every few years. Skip that and the flow slows down and the water quality drops off. It is straightforward maintenance, and it is worth staying on top of. If you have an existing system that has gone slow or stopped producing, that is very often a filter or membrane at the end of its life rather than a system that needs replacing.

Do I need an RO system if I already have a water softener?
They do different jobs. A softener removes hardness minerals across the whole house to protect your plumbing and appliances. An RO system filters the water at the kitchen tap for drinking and cooking. Plenty of Valley homes have both.
How often do the filters need changing?
Filters are typically changed annually and the membrane every few years, though it depends on your water and how much the system is used. We will tell you the schedule for the system we fit.
Can you connect it to my refrigerator?
Usually, yes — the ice maker and water dispenser can be run off the RO system so long as the fridge is reasonably close to the unit.
My RO system has slowed right down. Is it broken?
Most likely it needs a filter or membrane change rather than replacement. Let us look at it before you replace the whole thing.
